They are designed to provide shaft support where the mounting surface is perpendicular (vertical axis) to the shaft axis. It is commonly used with Future Electronics Egypt 8mm lead screw and 8mm shaft to provide linear motion in vertical direction for the Z axis in 3d printer or CNC machine.
